Sin Fronteras Youth Group celebrates a successful year
The Hope CommUnity center focuses on empowering our community through advocacy, service, and storytelling. We believe that, in order to reach the hearts of those around us, we must foster change and love in our Youth. The youth of today are our Hope for the future of tomorrow, and it’s vital to provide the space for them to develop skills that will help them make the change possible.
The Youth and Family team are strong believers in this, and they work hard to create a space for marginalized youth to be part of, a majority of our kids come from undocumented households and some are undocumented themselves. They experience first-hand the struggles of being undocumented in a society that turns a blind eye to them and their families, but they have the grit to continue on and show up.
The Sin Fronteras Youth Group is composed of high schoolers from Apopka High School and Wekiva High School, they all make their way after school to meet and immerse themselves in different discussions and topics. These topics are presented in workshops or activities that guide our youth on how to become better leaders within their own community and how they can develop skills to empower not only themselves but others.
The Sin Fronteras Youth Group members are not only participants in our programs, but active volunteers of the Hope Community Center. You can oftentimes find them helping out at our special events like the Kermes, Easter Egg Hunt, and Toy Sale. The Sin Fronteras Youth is the backbone of many of these events, without them the events wouldn’t be possible.
On May 4th, the Sin Fronteras Youth Group celebrated a successful year of growth and empowerment as they met for their last meeting of the school year.
Facilitated by the Youth and Family Team, the group took a look back as they shared their favorite memories of the past year. Throughout the meeting, they shared lessons and moments that impacted their lives, and many of them expressed how they changed the way they communicate. Others mentioned the importance of listening to others without judging, and how to be more accepting of each other.
Towards the end of the meeting, they all enjoyed a nice lunch prepared by Youth and Family Director, Nilka Melendez. The Sin Fronteras youth group said their final goodbyes to their senior friends who will be graduating, we will be starting the new Sin Fronteras Youth Group next school year.
