A crowd of about 400 people gathered at Hope on Sunday, March 1, 2015, for an immigration rights rally and to hear Congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, a nationally known immigration advocate. Sister Ann Kendrick led a ritual of solidarity while images of butterflies — symbolizing transformation — and farmworker symbols were held high by our youth.
The sky was cloudy, but fortunately, the rain held off as the crowd heard stories from immigrants and DACA Dreamers and listened to Jose Luis Marantes of Mi Familia Vota, Congressman Alan Grayson (D-Florida) and Congressman Gutiérrez (D-Illinois). The Congressmen also took time to listen to the stories of our community members and pledged their continued support in the fight for a just humane immigration policy.
The sense of solidarity was strong at Hope CommUnity Center, as hearts and voices were joined in the message: Sí, se puede! Yes, we can!
