Service Learning
Why Service Learning? And Why Apopka?
Service Learning is more than just volunteer work! This model of service is reciprocal, where the benefits of community interactions are mutually beneficial.
Service Learning allows a group to actively provide service to a community while learning about its history, social justice issues, and culture.
Apopka offers a rich learning environment for this experience. Our area is brimming with history and diversity, from its rural farmworker roots to its increasingly urbanized, multicultural character.
Why Hope CommUnity Center?
We are pioneers in the field of Community and Civic Engagement! Our Service Learning experiences are not just for college students on Alternate Spring Break. HCC has developed a unique model which makes it possible for people from all walks of life to participate in our community, and offers year-round availability for Service-Learning experiences that last from a single day up to an entire semester.
The HCC staff can develop a customized experience with your school or organization, with a focus on any or all of our core missions:
- immigration
- farmworkers
- community organizing
- social justice
- the environment.
Some of the groups we’ve worked with are Rollins College, UCF, Timbercreek High School, Duke University, Jacksonville University, and Harvard University.
When people create community across cultures and socioeconomic status, we can effectively change the world!
